Terms & Conditions

1. Eligibility

1.1 The event is open to all students currently studying for either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the UK.

1.2 Students, hereinafter referred to as "Participants", can only participate in the 8 Task Challenge, hereinafter referred to as the "Challenge", as a member of a team containing 4 participants. 

1.3 During registration on the day of the Challenge, each participant and team must produce appropriate identification to confirm that they are currently studying at a UK university. If appropriate identification cannot be provided then the participant may still be allowed to take part in the Challenge but their team will not be eligible for any prizes from the 8 Task Challenge’s prize fund or a placing. A university or NUS card is considered to be an appropriate form of identification.

1.4 Teams can be made up of participants from different years of study, courses, clubs or societies however this may limit the number of event categories the team will automatically qualify for.

2. Registration and fees

2.1 Teams must register their entry online and make payment using PayPal.

2.2 In consideration for being granted the right to participate, the participants and teams must register and pay the registration fee of £59.80 (£14.95 each) by no later than the specified entry deadline.

2.3 Included in the registration fee is:

  • - Event entry for one team and its four participants.
  • - Full event briefing pack including all details of the day and how it will work.
  • - 8 Task Challenge branded hoody.
  • - Bike hire and appropriate safety equipment.
  • - Canoe hire and safety equipment including buoyancy aids, an on water safety boat and a safety briefing.
  • - Post-event refreshments and prize giving.*
  • - Post-event scores and feedback .
  • - St. John Ambulance.

*It is the participant’s responsibility to notify the Event Organisers of any special dietary needs on the registration form.

2.4 A team or participant will not be entitled to participate in the Challenge until full payment of the registration fee has been received by TARGETevents, hereinafter referred to as the "Event Organiser". No payment shall be deemed to have been received until the Event Organiser has received cleared funds.

3. Scoring and prizes

3.1 Each team will be ranked and placed in the 12 competition categories by their overall team score and task scores. The overall score will be made up of:

  • - A team’s overall online test score (taken pre-event to test each individual team member's problem solving and decision making skills)
  • - Checkpoint 1 task score
  • - Checkpoint 2 task score
  • - Checkpoint 3 task score
  • - Checkpoint 4 task score
  • - Checkpoint 5 task score
  • - Checkpoint 6 task score
  • - Checkpoint 7 task score
  • - Checkpoint 8 task score
  • - Overall time to complete the course.

3.2 Prizes and awards will be presented at the end of the day once all teams have completed the Challenge and each team’s score has been totalled. It is important to note that to claim a prize, teams and all their participants must be present at the end of the day for the prize giving. If they are not then the Event Organiser has the right to award and present the prize to the next best placed team.

3.3 All cash prizes won will be settled with participants within 14 working days of the event concluding.

3.4 The prize fund of £8,500 will be allocated amongst the Challenge categories as shown in the Details section of this website. 

4. Participation and format

4.1 Each participant and their team acknowledge that participation in the Challenge can potentially be physically strenuous. It is acknowledged that participants in the Challenge are aware of the nature of the Challenge and associated medical and physical risks involved with canoeing, cycling and walking or running. 

4.2 Each participant agrees that he/she is physically capable of participating in the Challenge and agrees to be solely responsible for his/her actions. The Event Organiser, its officers, employees, affiliates, associated companies, sponsors, supporters or medical advisers are not responsible for any injury or illness that participants may suffer as a result of his/her participation in the Challenge. The participant accepts that should any medical or physical condition arise prior to the event which is likely to affect a participant's ability to complete the Challenge, the participant will withdraw in accordance with these conditions.

4.3 The Event Organiser may introduce cut off times as they see fit as part of the Challenge rules, being limits on the time taken to complete sections of the Challenge (as initiated by the Event Organiser at its discretion) to ensure the safe and proper running of the Challenge. Subsequently, competitors may be instructed to withdraw from the Challenge in accordance with imposed cut off times.

4.4 The Event Organiser reserves the right at any time to remove participants and teams from the Challenge or prevent  participants participating in the Challenge if in the Event Organiser’s sole discretion, it considers such action necessary for safety reasons or the proper enjoyment of the Event by other participants or for any other reasonable reason. No refund of the registration fee shall be made if the participant has acted negligently, maliciously, with willful misconduct or otherwise without due care and attention for the Challenge or other participants, so as to cause his/her removal.

4.5 While the Event Organiser takes every care with the staging of the Challenge, the participants acknowledge that personal accident and personal items insurance is his or her sole responsibility.

4.6 All decisions and rulings by the Event Organiser and its employees are considered final. Accordingly, the teams and participants will comply with all Challenge rules and all instructions and guidelines given by stewards, marshalls, and safety personnel. The participant acknowledges and agrees that the Event Organiser will organise and run the Challenge and will have sole authority and be the final arbiter on all decisions relating to the safety, running and organisation of the Challenge, the rules of the Challenge, the timings/finish times, placings and prizes.

4.7 Participants acknowledge and accept that circumstances concerning the Challenge may change from time to time for reasons out of the Event Organiser’s reasonable control or otherwise, without the Event Organiser incurring any liability and without any rights to withdrawal being accrued by the participant.

5. Withdrawals, cancellations, alterations and refunds

5.1 The Event Organiser operates a 7 day cooling off period. Accordingly, teams and participants are entitled to cancel their application to participate provided the Event Organiser receives written notice of cancellation within 7 days of payment of the event fee.  During this 7 day period a team is able to cancel its entry and receive a full refund of the event fee by emailing info@8taskchallenge.co.uk or writing to TARGETevents, The Fountain Building, Howbery Park, Benson Lane, Wallingford, Oxon OX10 8BA.

5.2 Payment of the registration fee by a team or participant provides no guarantee of a place at the Challenge. Should the event be over-subscribed a ballot will take place to fairly determine which teams will participate. Teams successful in the ballot will be notified with their confirmation and the next steps. If a team is unsuccessful in the ballot they will be notified and a full refund will be made via PayPal within 7 working days.

5.3 The Event Organiser reserves the right to alter the start time of the Challenge from the current publicised time of 9.30am. In the event of a change of start time the teams and participants will be notified of the revised start time with as much notice as reasonably practicable. No refund in full or in part shall be made for any change in start time for the Challenge provided the Challenge takes place on the specified date of the event.

5.4 The Event Organiser reserves the right to change the date of the Event. In the event of such change of date of the Event, and the participant is unable to attend on the revised date, he/she has 14 days to inform the Event Organiser in writing from when the change in date is announced in order to receive a refund of their entry fee.

5.5 In the event the Event Organiser withdraws the offer of a place to the participant for any reason at any time it will provide the participant with a full refund of the event fee, with no further liability whatsoever arising from such withdrawal.

5.6 The Event Organiser reserves the right to amend the Challenge format due to circumstances beyond its reasonable control or for any safety related reason. In the event of the Challenge being cancelled it shall provide teams and participants with a full refund with no further liability whatsoever arising from such cancellation.

6. Event Organiser’s responsibilities/liability

6.1 Notwithstanding anything in these Terms & Conditions the Event Organiser shall not be liable to any of the participants for any liability in contract, tort (including negligence) or otherwise for any loss of business, revenue or profits, anticipated savings or wasted expenditure, loss or damage of or to personal equipment belonging to the participants or any indirect or consequential loss or damage whatsoever (notwithstanding that such loss was within the contemplation of the parties at the date of submitting the entry form) arising out of participants taking part in the Challenge or any other matter arising under these Conditions nor for an aggregate amount greater than the Registration Fee paid by the team/participants. Without limiting the foregoing, the event organiser will not be liable for any actions of any spectators or other third parties unless otherwise set out herein. 

6.2 Accordingly teams and participants by completing the registration form and submitting their payment for the event expressly and irrevocably renounce, for themselves, heirs and successors in title the right to any recourse or claims whatsoever against the Event Organiser, its officers, employees, suppliers and/or sponsors and/or persons for whom it is answerable (“Associated Parties”) as a result of any kind of physical, mental or other loss or damage of whatsoever nature (including any loss of earnings, profits, or pain and suffering) suffered by participants, directly or indirectly, or by participants’ families or by any dependents and caused by an event in any way relating to the participant’s participation in the Challenge, and the participant hereby undertakes, for him/herself, heirs and successors in title to indemnify and hold harmless the Event Organiser, and the Associated Parties for any costs and/or amount which they or any of them may be required to pay as a result of any recourse or claim aforesaid by whomsoever made. Participants also agree to indemnify the Event Organiser and the Associated Parties for any claim, actions, liabilities or losses resulting from any breach of the participant’s declarations above and/or the participant’s negligent acts or omissions and/or willful misconduct.

6.3 Nothing in these Conditions shall exclude or limit the liability of the Event Organiser:

6.3.1 for death or personal injury caused by the Event Organiser's negligence;

6.3.2 for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or

6.3.3 for any matter which it would be illegal for the Event Organiser to exclude or attempt to exclude liability.

6.4 This clause shall be read and construed and shall have effect subject to any limitation imposed by any applicable law.

7. Publicity, data and results

7.1 Teams and participants consent to their/his/her appearance in the Challenge being filmed, recorded, incorporated and exploited in whole or in part in any, film, video or broadcast of whatever nature by all means and in all media and formats now or invented after the date of these terms and conditions.

7.2 Teams and participants consent to the use and reproduction of their name, likeness, appearance and photographs, films and recordings by all means and in all media for the purpose of advertising, publicity and otherwise in relation to the exploitation of the Challenge (and future events) and/or the promotion of the Challenge (and future events) and the commercial rights relating to the Challenge (and future events) provided that such use does not imply direct endorsement by the team or its members of any official sponsor or supplier of the Event.

7.3 Registering as a team or part of a team, each participant in the Challenge agrees and understands that the information contained in their registration may be used by the Event Organiser. Participants accept that their personal details and their event scores may be held, processed and disclosed to the Challenge's sponsors both electronically and manually in compliance with applicable procedures, laws and regulations to which the Event Organiser is subject. Participants accept that they may be contacted post-event by the event's sponsors as well as the Event Organiser for the purposes of obtaining feedback. The Event Organiser may hold each team's registration and the information contained within it for the period of each participant's degree regardless of their success in the Challenge or them participating in the Challenge.

7.3.1 The Data Protection Act of 1988 entitles each participant to a copy of certain personal data held by the Event Organiser whether in manual records or on computer on submission of a written request. 

7.4 The Event Organiser will use best endeavours to provide both a Challenge finish time and score for teams and participants however it cannot be held responsible for any computer result anomalies or any technical malfunctions.

7.5 These Terms & Conditions shall be interpreted in accordance with the laws of England and any dispute arising hereunder shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts.
