LONDON, 12-24 July 2010: CSET Summer School closes to huge applause….
The CSET Summer School initiative was launched in 2008 by a group of the City’s leading law firms. The firms joined together to establish a rigorous week long programme to identify and encourage university students from a diverse range of backgrounds to consider a career in law. The resounding success of the 2008 CSET Summer School resulted in the provision of two one-week schools in 2009 and then a further two in July 2010.
The two summer schools in July contained a fast paced mix of case studies, guest speakers from all areas of the legal profession, debating and workshops with City law firms and public law bodies. The guests during the week, in addition to representatives from the City law firms who sponsor the event, included Barristers, the Government Legal Service and the Financial Services Authority. But it wasn’t all hard work for the lucky students who took part. There were also social activities laid on like a barbeque on the first evening, dinner in the City after a trip to one of five City law firms and arguably the most eagerly anticipated evening of the whole week – a Graduation Dinner at the Law Society on the final evening.
The students departed after a week, which for nearly all those who attended opened their eyes to the incredibly diverse opportunities available within the legal sector, and went home to catch-up on some well earned sleep!

LONDON, 8-11 June 2010: TARGETchances City Law for ethnic minorities….
TARGETchances City law for ethnic minorities took place for the seventh year in June 2010. The event was sponsored by 16 leading City law firms all keen to meet high calibre students who could potentially become future trainees.
Open to first-year law students and second-year non-law students, the event was targeted specifically at ethnic minority students with a strong academic performance and well rounded CV. Those skilled enough to pass the candidate screening phase (including a telephone interview) were offered places at one of two two-day events.
Two hundred students descended into London from 37 leading universities, with some travelling from as far as Durham and York to attend. Sponsors made sure that the two days were packed with insightful and challenging activities from the word go. Students learnt exactly what it is that recruiters look for in applications and at interviews – not what they can find in brochures and on the web – but specific tips about how to be an outstanding candidate and avoid those common pitfalls made by students.
A legal case study was also undertaken, giving attendees first-hand experience of what they might experience at an assessment centre, but with the added benefit of working with trainees to get that all important feedback on their performance. Other activities included in-depth presentation skills training, a panel discussion of senior partners, and various networking opportunities with trainees, associates and graduate recruiters.
As the event came to a close the students were left with a wealth of insider knowledge, an informed idea about the skills required to be a City lawyer and key contacts for the future. One attendee aptly summarised her experience: ‘You can study and learn the law from textbooks and exams, but to truly understand it and to truly see whether you click with the subject, you need to come to events like these and experience the law in action.’
With 100% of attendees stating that they would highly recommend the event to their friends, plans are already underway for 2011. For more details on the 2011 event and how to apply click here.
