TARGETchances law is an introduction to the legal sector; sponsored by SNR Denton and RPC. It will take place in London on Monday 5 December 2011.

If you think you have what it takes to pursue a career in the legal sector, then this event is your opportunity to get your foot through the door and have all your questions answered.

At this one-day event you will have the unique chance to:

  • get application and interview skills training.
  • receive individual feedback from firm representatives.
  • participate in assessment centre style exercises.
  • gain invaluable insight into how to prepare for a career in law.

Who can apply?

This event is open to first-year law students and second-year non-law students studying at a university in the UK or Ireland, who can demonstrate a high level of academic performance. All students who fill these criteria will be considered and particular attention will be paid to those from a diverse background.

Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

How to apply?

Applications open in September 2011 and should be made via the TARGETevents application form. You will simply need to complete your details and attach your CV and cover letter detailing your motivation for wanting to attend the event.

Training

As a trainee you will receive first rate training in a supportive working environment. You will work closely with a partner and will be given real responsibility as soon as you are ready to handle it. At least six months will be spent in four areas of our practice and we encourage our trainees to express preferences for the areas in which they would like to train. In addition to the Professional Skills Course we provide a complementary programme of in-house training. When you qualify we hope you will stay with us and we endeavour to place you in the area of law that suits you best.

What do we look for in our trainees?

We appoint fifteen trainees each year from a law or non-law background. Although proven academic ability is important (we require a 2.1 degree or above) we also value energy, enthusiasm, business sense, commitment and the ability to communicate and relate well to others. Recruitment usually takes place in the September, two years before commencement of the training contract. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to one of our assessment days during which they will have the opportunity to meet our existing trainees and partners.

Vacation scheme programme

We also run summer vacation schemes each year to enable prospective trainees to spend time with us, getting a feel for the firm’s work and atmosphere. Twelve students at a time spend two weeks with us and are integrated as closely as possible with the real working life of the firm. You should get a good idea of whether a career at RPC is right for you.

Training programme

As a trainee you will undertake four six-month seats. This will include a contentious seat, plus experience in our transaction-based departments such as Banking, Real Estate, Corporate etc. This may also include the opportunity to work in one of our international offices or with one of our clients.

You will be given as much responsibility as you can handle and will be working with the law, with your team and with clients in real business situations.

Placements
